NHS Suffolk and North East Essex commission Ace Anglia to deliver free annual health check workshops to people with learning disability across Suffolk. The workshops are also open to primary care staff, families, support workers, and carers who support people with learning disabilities.
Each workshop is delivered by two of our peer educators, supported by a health project coordinator. The full session lasts around two hours, but we can also offer shorter or drop-in versions to suit different needs and settings.
The aim of the workshop is to encourage more people to attend their annual health checks, and to build confidence around visiting the doctor. We also hear about people’s experiences, what went well and what could be improved. We explain what a good annual health check should look like and make sure everyone feels informed and included.
Our workshops are very interactive and accessible. We use a range of engaging tools and activities including quizzes, Makaton, ‘guess the amount’ games, props, and cards for people to hold up.
This helps everyone get involved and makes the sessions enjoyable and easy to understand.
