Ace Anglia is working together with Lancaster University, University of East Anglia, University of Essex, and Inclusion North on an 18-month research project called Swept Under the Carpet – Let’s Talk About Sex, Periods and Having Babies.

People with learning disabilities don’t get the help they need to take care of their bodies.

Many people with learning disabilities don’t get to have a choice about having babies or taking care of them.

People with learning disabilities don’t get to talk about these issues very often.

This area of our lives is often Swept Under the Carpet which is the name for our project.

Shenah and Rae are working as co-researchers on this project and they attended a two-day training session in Norwich with the project team, where they learned more about research and their important role as co-researchers.

As part of this research project, we asked people with a learning disability to complete a survey to help us focus the project.

The results showed that the topic people most wanted to explore was:

“Choosing whether or not to have a baby.”

We will now run focus groups and conduct interviews to hear more about people’s views and experiences on this topic.

We will be sharing updates as the project develops.

There will be ways for you to share your experiences, and views to be part of the project. We’ll post updates and on our social media – so keep an eye out if you’d like to get involved!
